Who is this 2-day hybrid workshop for?
This two‐day workshop is aimed at specialist teachers, speech and language therapists, intervenors, teaching assistants and family members who are exploring, using and assessing tactile communication with children who are deafblind or would benefit from using tactile sign strategies in mainstream and specialist settings.
Workshop objectives:
By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:
- define bodily tactile communication and tactile sign language –including theoretical frameworks and how these come together in emerging tactile language users
- use practical strategies to support learners who communicate in a bodily-tactile way
- supporting the emergence of tactile language
- identify principles of tactile sign language and adapting sign language to the tactile mode
- start supporting assessment and goal setting for learners using bodily tactile communication and tactile sign language
Presenter:
Steve Rose is a NatSIP Associate, independent speech and language therapist and consultant on deafblindness. He has experience of working as a speech and language therapist in NHS and the voluntary sector across a range of settings. He is currently work in the Wolfson Neurodisability Team, Great Ormond Street Hospital, as well as in independent practice. Steve is a national advisor (deafblidnness) for Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists and an active collaborator in national and international groups focusing on tactile langauge and cognition.
